====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 10, 2006 Dear HSLDA members and friends: Several bills have been introduced in Massachusetts which affect families in general, but are not directly related to homeschooling. While each of these bills would have real impact on families, HSLDA generally limits its focus to bills which directly affect educational freedom, parental rights, or religious liberties. However, we are sending this message to families who want to get more involved in family issues in Massachusetts. The Article 8 Alliance describes itself as a "parental rights organization" which has been formed to "end judicial tyranny, same-sex 'marriage,' and homosexual activist recruitment of our children in the public schools." This group organized a mass protest of House Bill 1641, which would require "health education" -- which includes sex education -- as a part of the core curriculum of public schools. On January 31, over four hundred citizen activists crowded into a legislative hearing room to oppose the bill. Governor Mitt Romney responded to this public outcry by announcing, the next day, that he is "against a proposal to require health education as a part of the public school core curriculum," saying the decision to offer these types of courses should rest with parents and local school boards. Romney said, "I note that in my service as governor, I have never had someone come up to me and say, 'You know what, my kids are just not learning enough about sex in school; they're just not getting enough of it.'" Instead, he said, "I have, however, had a number of people tell me that they think we should have abstinence education in school, that all the emphasis is on sex and preventive health practices but there is nothing being spoken about abstinence." To contact the Article 8 Alliance to support traditional marriage, you can go online to http://www.article8.org/contact_form.shtml or write to them at the following address: Article 8 Alliance PO Box 1612 Waltham, MA 02454. HSLDA strongly supports parental rights, and has officially concluded that "same-sex marriage" undermines the natural and sacred rights of parents. HSLDA supports the goals of the Article 8 Alliance but does not officially endorse the organization. Sincerely, Scott W.
