====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 10, 2006 Dear HSLDA members and friends: Now is your opportunity to support traditional marriage. Senator Brady has introduced Senate Joint Resolution 70, which allows a marriage amendment to go to the voters this upcoming election. SJR 70 is now in the Senate Rules Committee. If SJR 70 is passed by both the Senate and House, the issue will go to the people and you will have the opportunity to vote for traditional marriage during the next election. The main part of SJR 70 reads: "...[T]here shall be submitted to the electors of the State for adoption or rejection at the general election next occurring at least 6 months after the adoption of this resolution a proposition to add Section 9 to Article XIII of the Illinois Constitution as follows: Only marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized in Illinois. The uniting of persons of the same sex in a civil union, domestic partnership, or other similar same sex relationship shall not be valid or recognized in Illinois." Your right to homeschool rests on another freedom: the freedom to direct the education and upbringing of your children. Your parental rights, in turn are supported by the sanctity of marriage. Anything that undermines marriage may ultimately undermine parental rights. Amending the Illinois constitution will protect the concept of marriage from activist state judges. Without this amendment, an activist judge out of step with the citizens will one day redefine marriage for us. Action Requested: Please call the members of the Senate Rules Committee listed below and give them this message: "Please vote for SJR 70. Give citizens an opportunity to have their voices heard in support of preserving traditional marriage." You do not need to identify yourself as a homeschooler. Senate Rules Committee members: Chairperson: Louis S. Viverito 217-782-0054 John J. Cullerton 217-782-7260 Rickey R. Hendon 217-782-6252 Edward Petka 217-782-0422 Peter J. Roskam (is strongly supporting the marriage amendment) 217-782- 8022 Thank you for standing with us for freedom.
