Wisconsin--Calls Needed in Support of Marriage

From the HSLDA E-lert Service...

February 9, 2006

Dear HSLDA members and friends:

Thank you for your calls last year to support the proposed traditional
marriage amendment, Senate Joint Resolution 53, which bans same-sex
marriage, passed the Senate on December 7, 2005. The senate voted 19
to 14 in favor of the marriage amendment.

Senator Scott Fitzgerald, stated that the amendment prevents "judges
of the state from creating marriage in another name and granting
identical benefits to unmarried couples."

The amendment went to the Assembly. If it is passed by the Assembly,
the marriage amendment will go to the voters, via a statewide
referendum, in November 2006.

This is good news. Even better news is the fact that Democratic
Governor Doyle does not have the power to veto it because the
amendment goes straight from the Assembly to the people.

The proposed amendment states, "Only a marriage between one man and
one woman shall be valid and recognized as a marriage in the state. A
legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage
for unmarried individuals shall not be valid or recognized in this

There has been no activity on the bill yet this year, so we need you
to keep calling to get this amendment passed through the Assembly.

Action Requested:

Please call your Assemblyman and give him this message:

"Please vote for SJR 53. Give citizens an opportunity to have their
voices heard in support of preserving traditional marriage."

Your right to homeschool rests on another freedom: the freedom to
direct the education and upbringing of your children. Underlying your
right to homeschool are parental rights, which are supported by the
sanctity of marriage. Anything that undermines marriage may ultimately
undermine parental rights and therefore threaten your freedom to

Amending the Wisconsin constitution will protect marriage from
activist state judges. Without this amendment, an activist judge, out
of step with the citizens, will one day redefine marriage for

Thank you for standing with us for freedom. We will be notifying you
next year as to the exact timing when the assembly will be voting for
this marriage amendment.
