Vermont--Good News on Educational Neglect Bill

======================================================================
From the HSLDA E-lert Service...
======================================================================

February 7, 2006

Dear HSLDA members and friends:

Thank you for your rapid response to our e-lert asking for action on
House Bill 594, which would make school districts report unexcused
absences from school as "educational neglect." We believe your calls
made a difference. Retta Dunlap of the Vermont Home Education Network
informs us that she has reliable information from legislators that
they do not intend to pass this legislation at this time.

Other states have tried using social workers to combat truancy, which
serves only to frustrate the social workers. There are enough serious
threats to children that Child Protective Service workers resent being
pressed into action as truant officers, and the truant officers are
not so eager to hand over their authority to social workers. In
short, H.B 594 is a bill that everyone has reason to dislike.

HSLDA thanks Vermont's active homeschoolers, and especially Retta
Dunlap, for your efforts to stand up for freedom in the Green Mountain
State. As this goes to press, H.B. 594 appears to be effectively dead
for this year.

Sincerely,

Scott Somerville
HSLDA Staff Attorney

-> How long are you in for?

Some families are facing what seems like a lifelong commitment to
homeschooling, with children at both ends of the spectrum-some
graduating and some just reaching school age. If you're going to
be "in" for a while, consider a lifetime membership with HSLDA.
It's a good deal for families with more than 10 years of
homeschooling ahead.
