Vermont--Your Calls Needed to Stop Changes to Educational Neglect Law!

From the HSLDA E-lert Service...

February 6, 2006

Dear HSLDA members and friends:

House Bill 594 would allow each school district to report families for
child neglect simply for failing to send in their paperwork. A
hearing has been scheduled for this bill, and we need your action!

Action Requested:

1. Please call each member of the House Education Committee. Tell
them, "Social workers should not be turned into truant officers!
Please vote 'No' on HB 594!" (All numbers are in the 802 area code.)

Representative Cross of Winooski, Chair
Representative LaVoie of Swanton, Vice-Chair
Representative Barnard of Richmond
Representative Clark of Vergennes
Representative Endres of Milton
Representative Jerman of Essex
Representative Kilmartin of Newport City
Representative Livingston of Manchester
Representative McLaughlin of Royalton
Representative Mook of Bennington
Representative Potter of Clarendon

2. If possible, please attend the hearing on this bill, scheduled for
February 9, 2006, at the Capitol in Montpelier. The hearing will be
in Room 32 of the Capitol at 9 a.m. For more information on the
hearing, contact Theresa Utton with the Education Committee at

Under current law, children who are being educated at home are not
"neglected," even if the family fails to send in the appropriate
paperwork (although such children may technically "truant"). This
bill would define "child neglect" to include failure to submit
paperwork, regardless of the reason of the failure to submit the
paperwork. This could cause a serious hassle for many homeschoolers!

-> "I saved my entire membership fee with one discount"

"When I called Liberty to find out what kind of discount we could
get, they told us we would 10% off our car insurance and 5% off
our homeowner's insurance. What we will save is more than double
what it costs to join HSLDA. With one child getting his driver's
license this year, the savings will be a real blessing!"
