====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 6, 2006 Dear HSLDA members and friends: Calls are needed immediately to stop House Bill 1234 (H.B. 1234) which would lower the age of compulsory attendance from 6 to 5. It also eliminates the waiver that automatically allows 6-year-olds to wait until age 7 to enter school. If this bill became law, families would be subject to the requirements of the homeschool statute two years earlier than now required. H.B. 1234 is scheduled for a hearing before the House Education Committee on Tuesday, February 7 at 10 a.m. Many education experts have concluded that beginning a child's formal education before they are academically and socially ready may damage their confidence and self-esteem causing poor scholastic performance later. Lowering the compulsory attendance age erodes the authority of parents who are in the best position to determine when their child's formal education should begin. In addition, it is certain that your tax bill will increase to pay for more classroom space and teachers to accommodate the additional students compelled to attend public schools. Action Requested: Please call all the members of the House Education Committee immediately--especially if one is your representative--and ask them to vote against this bill on Tuesday morning. You can express your opposition in your own words. Be concise and courteous. Here is an example: "Please vote against House Bill 1234, which would lower the compulsory attendance age from 6 to 5. This bill will raise taxes, will force students to start school too early, and will take away parental freedom to determine when their children should start school." This bill affects all students, so do not identify yourself as a homeschooler.
