|
====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Dear HSLDA members and friends: Today, homeschool freedom won in South Dakota because homeschoolers stood together. After an outcry from families across the state, the Senate Education Committee voted 4-3 to kill Senate Bill 110. The bill would have given school superintendents power to take the homeschool option away from students struggling in public schools. Those who testified against the bill at the hearing this morning included Jim Trimble on behalf of the Alternative Instruction Association and Dave LaFrance on behalf of South Dakota Christian Home Educators. LaFrance also read a letter to the committee in which I explained that the bill was unconstitutional. After being confronted with the bill's many problems, the sponsor asked for time to change the bill, but was rebuffed. A motion to adopt the bill then failed for lack of a second. Finally, a motion to kill the bill (defer it until the session is over) passed 4-3. A handful of homeschool parents initially supported this bill. However, families quickly rallied in opposition once they understood the real implications. Thank you for the phone calls you made. They made the difference. Sincerely, Scott A.
