====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Dear HSLDA members and friends: We need your calls to support House Bill 1340, the homeschool freedom bill. Please call your delegate this Thursday and Friday before noon. The House of Delegates will vote on the bill as early as this Friday afternoon (January 27). If passed, this bill will allow families with a high school diploma the same freedom to homeschool as other families and the bill will align Virginia with the other 48 states that allow homeschoolers who only have a high school diploma or less to teach their children without needless restrictions. Passage of the legislation will also end the harassment families without college degrees face from some school districts. Action Requested: Call your delegate and urge him or her to support House Bill 1340. Please give your delegate this message: "Please vote in support of H.B. 1340. It will protect every parent's right to homeschool in our state. Virginia needs to join the other 48 states that focus on results, not qualifications. The studies all show that homeschooling works, with students scoring above average regardless of the parents' qualifications." Background: HSLDA testified at the hearing for the bill and H.B. 1340 passed 11-8 before the House Education Committee today. Two years ago, HSLDA helped draft a bill and began the struggle to end the baccalaureate degree requirement in Virginia. Although the bill received substantial support, it did not become law. This year we have renewed our efforts. The Home Educators Association of Virginia and the Organization of Virginia Homeschoolers are also working hard to pass H.B. 1340. They supported the bill at the hearing today and have made valuable contributions to its progress.
