====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Dear HSLDA members and friends: On Monday, the Students and Daycare Subcommittee of the House Education Committee voted nearly unanimously to "pass by indefinitely" House Bill 537. The bill would have undermined homeschool freedom. Aside from the sponsor, Delegate Harry Parrish, only two persons spoke in favor of the bill. The first was Tony Lodovico, an employee of the City of Manassas school system (which requested the bill), and the second was a teenager attending public school. A member of the subcommittee asked if the Virginia School Board Association had a position on the bill. Their representative said no. This was no surprise since the bill would have added significantly to the administrative load of school systems. The chairman then asked if anyone wanted to speak in opposition to the bill. After only two had spoken (Yvonne Bunn of Home Educators Association of Virginia, and Parrish Mort of The Organization of Virginia Homeschoolers), however, Delegate Melanie L. Rapp moved to "pass by indefinitely." All subcommittee members present but one voted in favor of the motion. Bills that have been "passed by indefinitely" can only be released from subcommittee if the full committee specifically permits it, which is highly unlikely in this case. We anticipate this bill will receive no further legislative attention. HSLDA, Home Educators Association of Virginia, and The Organization of Virginia Homeschoolers were united in working to oppose H.B. 537. Thank you for your phone calls to Delegate Parrish. We believe he heard from so many of you that he is not likely to sponsor this type of bill in the future. We look forward to continuing to work with Delegate Parrish since he has supported many good homeschool related bills in the past. Sincerely, Scott A. Thought you'd want to know!!'"
