====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Dear HSLDA members and friends: The Home School Legal Defense Association urges all Kansas homeschoolers to fill the statehouse in Topeka on January 20 to make a powerful statement about homeschool freedom. The "Day Under the Dome" event is a terrific opportunity to meet the people who influence legislation that affects us and remind them that thriving home school families from every corner of the state continue to be actively involved in the governmental process. We encourage you to call your senator and representative and set up an appointment to meet with them (or one of their aides) or have lunch together to build a relationship that can help protect our freedom. A catered box lunch will be provided at no cost for lawmakers and aides who accept your invitation. Your message to your lawmakers is simple: Thank you for protecting homeschool freedom. As they observe all around them the impressive results of homeschooling--the displays, the speeches, the music, the mature behavior of your children--they will understand why you are committed to home-based education, and why it is worth protecting. Your time will be well-spent even if their schedules only permit them to have five minutes with you. If your senator or representative (or their aide) agree to meet with you, they may ask your children how they like being homeschooled. Help your children think through some questions they might be asked and some answers they might give that help express why homeschooling is worth protecting. If you are asked a question to which you do not know the answer, don't guess. Just tell them you will get back with an answer shortly and contact HSLDA or an event leader for guidance. Legislators sometimes ask what they can do to help homeschoolers. Since accepting government help often leads to the loss of freedom in the end, we do not want to ask for favors. We merely want to ask the lawmakers to protect the freedom to educate our children at home. The main events will ocurr between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. To find out how your students can participate in speech, music or as a Home School Ambassador, contact Kent Vincent at (785) 234-0022 or akvlaw@cox.net . Or contact Cornerstone Family School, the event host, at (785) 234-0330. The sponsor is Christian Home Educator's Confederation of Kansas (CHECK). To find the name of your Delegate or Senator to set up an appointment, go to our legislative toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox . A separate important event, Kansas Family Issues Forum, will be conducted Friday evening and Saturday morning (Jan. 20-21) in the Topeka Holiday Inn Holidome. For registration information contact c.j.bainum@sbcglobal.net . Sincerely, Scott A.
