Homeschool Graduates Now Considered "Preferred Enlistees" After a long struggle, the military has now fully opened the door to homeschoolers. Homeschool graduates who desire a career with any of the four branches of the Armed Services are being treated as "preferred enlistees." As a result of this change, homeschoolers will receive the same educational benefits, cash bonuses, and available positions in the Armed Services as any of their peers. Tennessee: TSSAA Updates Policy for Homeschooled Athletes On December 1, 2005, the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association changed its bylaws to permit its member schools (mostly public schools) to play any school team they choose in regular season competition. Nevada Family Surprised at Night by Police and Social Worker At 9:30, on a weekday evening in Las Vegas, an HSLDA member family received an unexpected visit from the police and a social worker. Less alert, due to the relatively late hour, the family allowed the police into their home after the social worker falsely stated "we do not need a search warrant to enter." The police, not the social worker, were allowed in and left scratching their heads because nothing was wrong. The family called the HSLDA 24 hour hotline and talked with HSLDA Attorney T.J. Schmidt who counseled them to refuse entry to the social worker. Home School Heartbeat -- The Reluctant Learner A child's unwillingness to learn may be evidence of a heart attitude, specific learning challenges, or even an uninteresting curriculum. This week, Michael Farris talks with Debra Bell, a home educator and director of the Home School Resource Center, about how to assess a child's abilities and attitudes and motivate him to love learning.
