1. Homeschool Graduates Now Considered "Preferred Enlistees"

After a long struggle, the military has now fully opened the door to
homeschoolers. Homeschool graduates who desire a career with any of
the four branches of the Armed Services are being treated as
"preferred enlistees." As a result of this change, homeschoolers will
receive the same educational benefits, cash bonuses, and available
positions in the Armed Services as any of their peers.

2. Tennessee: TSSAA Updates Policy for Homeschooled Athletes

On December 1, 2005, the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic
Association changed its bylaws to permit its member schools (mostly
public schools) to play any school team they choose in regular season
competition.

3. Nevada Family Surprised at Night by Police and Social Worker

At 9:30, on a weekday evening in Las Vegas, an HSLDA member family
received an unexpected visit from the police and a social worker. Less
alert, due to the relatively late hour, the family allowed the police
into their home after the social worker falsely stated "we do not need
a search warrant to enter." The police, not the social worker, were
allowed in and left scratching their heads because nothing was wrong.
The family called the HSLDA 24 hour hotline and talked with HSLDA
Attorney T.J. Schmidt who counseled them to refuse entry to the social
worker.

4. Home School Heartbeat -- The Reluctant Learner

A child's unwillingness to learn may be evidence of a heart attitude,
specific learning challenges, or even an uninteresting curriculum.
This week, Michael Farris talks with Debra Bell, a home educator and
director of the Home School Resource Center, about how to assess a
child's abilities and attitudes and motivate him to love learning.

teaching not only high school but also other grades. If you're a
