====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Wisconsin--Calls Needed in Support of Marriage Dear HSLDA members and friends: On December 7, the Wisconsin Senate approved the proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage and Vermont style, "civil unions." Senator Scott Fitzgerald, stated that the amendment prevents "judges of the state from creating marriage in another name and granting identical benefits to unmarried couples." The senate voted 19 to 14 in favor of the marriage amendment. Now the amendment goes to the assembly where it could pass at the beginning of the session in January. If it is passed by the assembly, the marriage amendment will go to the voters, via a statewide referendum, in November 2006. This is good news. Even better news is the fact that Democratic Governor Doyle does not have the power to veto it because the amendment goes straight from the assembly to the people. The proposed amendment states, "Only a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid and recognized as a marriage in the state. A legal status identical or substantially similar to that of marriage for unmarried individuals shall not be valid or recognized in this state." Your right to homeschool rests on another freedom: the freedom to direct the education and upbringing of your children. Underlying your right to homeschool are parental rights, which are supported by the sanctity of marriage. Anything that undermines marriage may ultimately undermine parental rights and therefore threaten your freedom to homeschool. Amending the Wisconsin constitution will protect marriage from activist state judges. Without this amendment, an activist judge, out of step with the citizens, will one day redefine marriage for everyone. Action Requested: Although the Wisconsin state assembly will not be voting on the marriage amendment this year, it is not too early to register your support with the office of your assemblyman. Please call until Wednesday, December 15th, which is when the legislature goes into recess. The legislative hotline is (800) 362-9472. Ask to speak with your representative. You can give him this message: "Please vote for S.J.R. 53. Give citizens an opportunity to have their voices heard in support of preserving marriage." You do not need to identify yourself as a homeschooler. Thank you for standing with us for freedom. We will notify you next year when the assembly schedules a vote on the marriage amendment.
