====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Iowa--Reminder - Filing Deadlines Fast Approaching Dear HSLDA members: This is just a short reminder, for those who file a Competent Private Instruction (CPI) form, that Iowa law requires that it be filed by the first day of school in your area. Unless you happen to notice school buses suddenly appearing on the roads one morning, however, you may not know when school begins in your area. If you are uncertain of the date, you may want to contact your area schools. Iowa law requires public schools to start within a certain window of time. They can begin as late as the first Monday in December, but they cannot start before the week in which September 1 falls (unless September 1 is a Sunday, in which case school can start the previous week). The department of education, however, can give a school system permission to start earlier. Recently, an HSLDA member reported that her school system has started already. Under current law and regulations, parents are required to file two copies of the CPI form with the local school board secretary. However, actual practice may vary in some areas. Also, the same member family reported that a school official recently asked for "updated" immunization information. Families are not required, of course, to provide immunization "updates." Immunization information is only required the first time you file a CPI form for a child. Homeschooling at the high school level can be tremendously rewarding. However, if you're not sure you can do it, we'd like to help. Homeschool veterans Becky Cook and Diane Kummer have joined the HSLDA staff to provide encouragement, ideas, and a helping hand to parents with questions about homeschooling at the high school level. You can contact them by calling HSLDA at (540) 338 5600 or via email at info@hslda.org. Sincerely, Scott A. Woodruff HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> There may be a shortage of the flu vaccine, but there's no shortage of legal protection for homeschoolers. HSLDA is 80,000 families standing together for the right of each family to teach their children at home. You don't have to stand alone against those who think homeschoolers should be regulated and controlled. Joining a team of home educators who will stick with you may be just what the doctor ordered for your homeschool . . . and your peace of mind.
