====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== Emails Needed--Senator Norm Coleman Wants to Hear from You Dear HSLDA members and friends: Many homeschoolers across the nation have discovered that federal law does not always treat homeschoolers equitably. The Home School Legal Defense Association is working with Congress to introduce the Homeschool Non-Discrimination Act (HONDA) to address these problems. HONDA fixes several oversights in federal law related to homeschooling. HONDA will clear up the confusion over whether public colleges can accept homeschool graduates who are younger than the state mandated compulsory attendance age. HONDA will clarify that local school officials cannot investigate homeschoolers with special needs children if those homeschoolers are not receiving federal IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) funds. HONDA will level the playing field for military recruits. Currently, only the Army allows homeschoolers to compete fairly. The Navy, Air force and Marines still attempt to discriminate against qualified homeschool graduates. HONDA will give privacy protections to the records of homeschoolers held by public schools. HONDA will ease the restrictive labor laws for homeschoolers between the ages 14-16 by extending periods of permissible employment. Currently, homeschooled students are treated like public school students for work purposes. Action Requested: Senator Norm Coleman wants to help homeschoolers by becoming an initial co-sponsor of HONDA, but he wants to hear from Minnesota homeschoolers before he supports the bill. Therefore, to show your support for these changes to federal law, please email Senator Coleman through his online contact form ( http://coleman.senate.gov/index.cfm?FuseAction=Contact.ContactForm ) and ask him to support the changes to federal law in HONDA. Also, please ask him to become an initial co-sponsor of HONDA. Finally, at the beginning of your comments, please make it to the attention of Jayne Jones (Legislative Assistant on Education). If you would like more information on HONDA before you email Senator Coleman, go to http://www.hslda.org/docs/nche/Issues/H/Homeschool_Non-Discrimination_ Act.asp .
