West Virginia--Include Homeschoolers in the Byrd Scholarship

Dear HSLDA members and friends:

As homeschooling continues to grow, the estimated 2 million
homeschooled students are facing continued discrimination under
Federal law. The Home School Legal Defense Association is working hard
to amend several parts of federal law through the Homeschool
Non-Discrimination Act (HONDA), which is being introduced in the House
and Senate this year. However, we need your help to open the Robert
C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program to homeschoolers.

The Byrd scholarship is designed to benefit the top one percent of
students in America, but homeschoolers are not eligible to receive the
scholarship except in states where they are considered private school
students (only 13 states consider homeschool students private school
students; homeschool students in all other states are ineligible,
including homeschooled students in West Virginia). Therefore, even if
your child can qualify for the Byrd scholarship, they are not eligible
simply because you chose to educate them at home.

Action Requested:

Please call or write to Senator Byrd and courteously ask him to
support ending discrimination against homeschoolers. It is especially
important that you are kind and gracious in your request; we simply
want to express our support for this simple change.

Please contact Senator Byrd's office between now and August 15 by
calling 202-224-3954 and email him through his online form -
http://byrd.senate.gov/byrd_email.html . You can also call the
Charleston district office at 304-342-5855.

-> Extreme makeovers are for extreme circumstances...

Most homeschools don't need an extreme makeover, but there is
something to be said for attention to detail and recognition of
accomplishments. Watch the media and you'll soon see that not
everyone wants home educators and homeschooling to look good.
HSLDA works hard to shed light on the good work of home educators
so it's obvious that we don't need someone "making-over" our
homeschools. Join HSLDA and help us show the world that we're fine
as we are . . . thank you!
