Most homeschools don't need an extreme makeover, but there is
something to be said for attention to detail and recognition of
accomplishments. Watch the media and you'll soon see that not
everyone wants home educators and homeschooling to look good.
HSLDA works hard to shed light on the good work of home educators
so it's obvious that we don't need someone "making-over" our

2. California official claims right to approve private homeschools

In a May 27, 2005, letter to the editor, Gilroy Unified School
District Attendance Officer Frank Valadez asserted that home educators
operating under the private school exemption must seek approval from
the district attendance officer before they can school their children
at home.

3. Minnesota homeschooler wins 2005 National Geographic Bee

Homeschooler Nathan Cornelius is more than a geography whiz-he's the
top one in the nation. On May 25, 2005, the 13-year-old beat nine
other National Geographic Bee finalists by correctly answering the
question, "Lake Gatun, an artificial lake that constitutes part of the
Panama Canal system, was created by damming which river?"

4. HSLDA defends Kentucky family against educational neglect charges

Home School Legal Defense Association recently defended a member
family in Kentucky charged with educational neglect, even though there
was no evidence of such neglect occurring.

6. Generation Joshua - Winners of Templeton Essay Contest Announced

Generation Joshua received 77 entries in the Templeton Essay Contest.
A total of $80,000 in scholarships to Patrick Henry College will be
awarded to the writers of the top five essays. "I'm excited that so
many members took part in contest and hope even more will participate
in next year's contest. I hope they enjoyed the experience and that
their interest will continue to grow as they learn more about how
God's Word influenced the founding of our great nation," said
Generation Joshua director, Ned Ryun
