====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== June 1, 2005 Louisiana--Update-Victory on Compulsory Attendance Bill Dear HSLDA members and friends: Your calls worked! At yesterday's hearing, the House Education Committee voted 8 to 3 to defer House Bill 476. The vote to defer the bill effectively kills this threat to parental rights. This bill would have lowered the compulsory attendance age in Louisiana from 7 to 5. If HB 476 had not been stopped, homeschooling families would have had to report two years earlier than they do right now. The following was reported by Beryl Amedee with CHEF of Louisiana, who testified at the committee hearing: "Rep. Jackson was scolded by the committee chair for disrespecting the office responsible for fiscal notes . . . He even refused to understand exactly why his bill infringes on parental rights . . . even though attorney Scott Norton of the DOE expressed parental rights concerns!" Please write to those who voted in favor of deferring the bill and thank them. With your phone calls you impacted the legislature and stood up for freedom. We also want to thank CHEF of Louisiana for their presence at the hearing and testimony against the bill. Together, victory was won!
