====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== May 25, 2005 Louisiana - Please Continue to Call to Oppose the Compulsory Attendance Bill Dear HSLDA members and friends: The House Education Committee postponed considering House Bill 476 at their hearing yesterday. At this time we do not know when the bill will be heard but it could be as early as tomorrow. We need you to continue to call the committee members listed below to defeat the bill. This bill would lower the compulsory attendance age in Louisiana from 7 to 5, which means that homeschooling families will have to report two years earlier than now required. The bill will affect all homeschool families regardless of whether you file as a home study program or a home-based private school. Please call now to help defeat this bill and forward this email to any friends who may not be members of HSLDA so they can call too. ACTION REQUESTED: 1) Please call all the House Education Committee Members listed below and give them this message: "Please oppose House Bill 476, which lowers the compulsory attendance age from 7 to 5. Lowering the compulsory attendance age to mandate school for 5 and 6 year-olds will only waste taxpayers' money and prevent parents from deciding whether their children are ready for school." You do not need to identify yourself as a homeschooler. Salter Office (800) 259-4135 2) Please call the sponsor of the bill, Representative Jackson, and request that he withdraw House Bill 476. You can give him this message: "Please withdraw your support of House Bill 476. Lowering the compulsory attendance age to mandate school for 5 and 6 year-olds would only waste taxpayers' money and prevent parents from deciding whether their children are ready for school." Representative Michael Jackson District Office: (225) 342-0774 BACKGROUND - Lowering the compulsory attendance age from seven to five would subject Louisiana home educators to the requirements of the homeschool statute two years earlier than now required. (You do not need to share this reason with your legislators.) - Many education experts have concluded that beginning a child's formal education too early may actually result in burnout and poor scholastic performance later. - Lowering the compulsory attendance age erodes the authority of parents who are in the best position to determine when their child's formal education should begin. - Another significant impact of lowering the compulsory attendance age would be an inevitable tax increase to pay for more classroom space and teachers to accommodate the additional students compelled to attend public schools. For more information on compulsory attendance, please see our memorandum at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=2343 To become a member of HSLDA and help us fight for homeschool freedom in Louisiana please visit http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=2344 .
