Dear HSLDA members and friends: We have just learned that the House Education Committee will have a hearing on House Bill 476 tomorrow, Tuesday, May 24 at 9:00 a.m. We need your help to kill this bill! Today and tomorrow please call the Committee members listed below. This bill would lower the compulsory attendance age in Louisiana from 7 to 5. This means that homeschooling families will have to report two years earlier than they have to right now! This bill will affect all homeschool families regardless of whether you file as a home study program or a home-based private school. Please call now to help defeat this bill as we fight for freedom in Louisiana. Feel free to forward this e-mail to any friends who may not be members of HSLDA so they can call too. REQUESTED ACTION 1) Please call all of the Education Committee Members listed below and give them this message: "Please oppose House Bill 476, a bill lowering the compulsory attendance age from 7 to 5. Lowering the compulsory attendance age to mandate school for 5 and 6 year-olds would only waste taxpayers' money and prevent parents from deciding whether their children are ready for school." You do not need to identify yourself as a homeschooler. (You do not need to share this reason with your legislators.) - Many education experts have concluded that beginning a child's formal education too early may actually result in burnout and poor scholastic performance later. - Lowering the compulsory attendance age erodes the authority of parents who are in the best position to determine when their child's formal education should begin. - Another significant impact of lowering the compulsory attendance age would be an inevitable tax increase to pay for more classroom space and teachers to accommodate the additional students compelled to attend public schools.
