====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== May 20, 2005 Texas--Update: Calls Needed in Support of Marriage Dear HSLDA members and friends, Thank you for your calls! They significantly contributed to the committee voting in favor of the marriage amendment. The members of the committee who were "on the fence" quickly voted in favor of the marriage amendment as a direct result of the massive amounts of phone calls. Now the bill goes to the full Senate. Please take a moment to call your Senator and ask for him to support House Joint Resolution 6 (HJR 6). If HJR 6 is passed by both the House and Senate, "This proposed constitutional amendment shall be submitted to the voters at an election to be held November 8, 2005. The ballot shall be printed to permit voting for or against the proposition: "The constitutional amendment providing that marriage in this state consists only of the union of one man and one woman and prohibiting this state or a political subdivision of this state from creating or recognizing any legal status identical or similar to marriage." Your right to homeschool rests on another freedom: the freedom to direct the education and upbringing of your children. Your parental rights, in turn are supported by the sanctity of marriage. Anything that undermines marriage may ultimately undermine parental rights. Amending the Texas constitution will protect the concept of marriage from activist state judges. Without this amendment, an activist judge out of step with the citizens will one day redefine marriage for us. ACTION REQUESTED Call your state senator and this give them this message: "Please vote for HJR 6. Give citizens an opportunity to have their voices heard in support of preserving marriage." You do not need to identify yourself as a homeschooler. Thank you for standing with us for freedom.
