====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== May 10, 2005 Texas--Calls Needed to Help Homeschoolers Become Lawyers Dear HSLDA members and friends: House Bill 826 is stuck in the Calendar Committee and we have heard that it will not come before the House if it is not scheduled for a vote by the Calendar Committee this week. H.B. 826 will make it possible for homeschool graduates of quality distance-learning law school programs to take the Texas Bar Exam thereby allowing them to practice law in the state. For instance, homeschoolers who graduate from the distance learning school Oak Brook College of Law in California are currently prohibited from taking the Texas Bar Exam. H.B. 826 would allow these types of students the opportunity to practice law in Texas. ACTION REQUESTED: 1. Call as many members of the Calendar Committee as possible and give them this message: "Please vote to schedule House Bill 826 for a vote in the full House. This bill will allow graduates from proven distance-learning law schools to take the Texas Bar Exam. Texas will benefit by allowing these skilled graduates to practice law in the state." Rep. Beverly Woolley (512) 463-0696 Rep. Gene Seaman (512) 463-0672 Rep. Bill Callegari (512) 463-0528 Rep. Gary Elkins (512) 463-0722 Rep. Lois W. Kolkhorst (512) 463-0600 Rep. Vilma Luna (512) 463-0484 Rep. Brian McCall (512) 463-0594 Rep. Sid Miller (254) 968-3535 Rep. Patrick M. Rose (512) 463-0647 Rep. Sylvester Turner (512) 463-0554 Rep. Corbin Van Arsdale (512) 463-0661 Rep. Sid Miller (254) 968-3535 BACKGROUND: More and more homeschool graduates are going to law school. This is an important development, since it creates a foundation for homeschoolers to have an impact on our legal system, run for office, and serve in government. This type of law school is a good fit for homeschool students, and passage of the bill will allow graduates to practice in Texas. Currently only California welcomes these students, and many of them are successfully practicing law in that state. Over the last eight years I have worked with numerous Oak Brook law students who have worked as Legal Assistants for the HSLDA Legal Department. They have turned out to be the best Legal Assistants to serve HSLDA. In fact, we have hired two graduates of the school to work as lawyers in our office. To continue to deny these exemplary lawyers that graduate from Oak Brook from practicing law in Texas serves no useful purpose.
