====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== April 28, 2005 Illinois--Your Calls Are Working Dear HSLDA members and friends: The hearing for Senate Bill 409 occurred yesterday. S.B. 409 would lower the compulsory school attendance age from 7 to 5-years old. As a direct result of your calls, Representative Acevdeo, Chairman of the Committee, decided not to bring it up for a vote. He is aware of the opposition and is concerned. This means that S.B. 409 is delayed until at least next Wednesday. Please keep calling the Committee. Fran Eaton was there lobbying on behalf of homeschoolers, along with Ralph Garcia of Christian Home Educators Coalition. They have indicated that there are seven members of the committee that have committed to vote "no." There are three more leaning that way. We only need eleven to defeat this bill. The defeat of S.B. 409 is within our grasp. ACTION REQUESTED Keep your calls coming into as many committee members as possible. Please give them this message: "Please vote against Senate Bill 409, which lowers the compulsory attendance age. This bill is unnecessary. It restricts parental choice and wastes taxpayer money."
