New York--Homeschool Rally at the Capitol
Dear HSLDA members and friends:
We have been told by insiders in the New York legislature that they don't generally hold hearings on bills. They suggested that the way for us to hold a "hearing" and to have our views made known to the legislature is to hold a Rally. Therefore we need as many families as possible to attend the Homeschool Rally in order to achieve the passage of the Homeschool Freedom bill.
Loving Education At Home (LEAH) has scheduled Tuesday, May 3, 2005, for homeschool families to gather at the Capitol and let their voices be heard. The Homeschool Rally will provide a great opportunity for you and your family to interact with your legislators and urge them to support important legislation for homeschooling freedom.
It is vitally important for homeschool families to attend the Homeschool Rally to demonstrate to all legislators that we are dedicated to the cause of homeschooling and freedom. While the main program will last about an hour, you and your family can use the time before and after the Rally on the East Capitol steps to meet with your legislator to discuss bills that are important to you.
This year the Homeschool Freedom Bill has again been introduced as Senate Bill 3641. This bill would help homeschooling families in New York by reducing the requirements under the Commissioner's Regulations. New York state has some of the most restrictive laws regarding home education but with your help we can work together to reduce this burden. Studies have found that increased regulation does not mean higher academic achievement for homeschoolers. New York needs a change in the homeschool laws.
Please come and help make the Homeschool Rally a great success and have an impact in New York.
ACTION REQUESTED
1) Please come to the Homeschool Rally on Tuesday, May 3, 2005. Meet at noon on the East Capitol steps for the main event. Make plans to schedule a meeting with your legislator(s) to discuss homeschool freedom and the bills in the legislature.
If you will be coming from a great distance or are looking for transportation contact your local LEAH chapter leader to find out if you area will be organizing a bus trip.
2) Pray for the Homeschool Rally and for the homeschool bills currently in the legislator. If you are unable to attend the Rally please visit our website at http://www.hslda.org/hs/state/NY/default.asp and call your legislators to ask them to support Senate Bill 3641. To find your legislator please use our legislative tool box at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox/
Thank you for standing for homeschooling and for freedom.
Sincerely,
Thomas J. Schmidt HSLDA Staff Attorney
