====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== April 21, 2005 Montana--Driver Education Bill Dies Dear HSLDA members and friends: On April 12, 2005, the Senate Highways and Transportation Committee tabled House Bill 673, the parent-taught driver education bill. This effectively kills this bill for the 2005 legislative session. This bill would have established a way for parents to provide driver's education as an acceptable alternative to obtaining the training through the public school system. Students instructed by their parents under the proposed law would have been able to obtain a learning permit so long as a parent met certain requirements. This bill would not have prohibited parents from teaching their children how to drive, as they are now entitled to do. It would have empowered parents to choose their own curriculum and to provide the training now only offered through the local school district. Thank you for your calls, emails, and letters to legislators about this bill. We are hopeful that this type of legislation will be enacted when the Legislature meets again in 2007. Sincerely, Dewitt T. Black, III HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> How many of your friends would pay your legal fees?
