New Mexico--Surprise Victory in Legislature

Dear HSLDA members and friends:

To our surprise and joy, the New Mexico legislature has enacted one of
the best social worker training laws in the country. Senate Bill 233,
which was signed by Governor Richardson on April 6, 2005, states, "All
employees of the Department shall be trained in their legal duties to
protect the constitutional and statutory rights of children and
families from the initial time of contact, during the investigation,
and throughout any treatment." The same legislation also requires
social workers to notify families of the allegations made against them
at the time of initial contact. This is a big step forward for New
Mexico, since social workers previously received little to no training
about parental rights.

HSLDA routinely works with parents who have been accused of child
abuse and neglect during the initial stages of an investigation.
While we do not defend child abusers, we are committed to protecting
family freedoms. By working hard and working together, New Mexico
families can make sure that all government agents, including social
workers, comply with the Constitution.

Sincerely,

Scott Somerville
