====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== April 8, 2005 Indiana--Calls Needed This Weekend to Support $6,000 Tax Credit for Homeschools Dear HSLDA members and friends: A bill creating a $6,000 state tax credit for homeschool families is making tremendous progress due, in part, to your calls. After fine tuning Senate Bill 281 this week with several amendments, we expect the full House to vote on the bill on Monday. To pass Monday's crucial test, we need vigorous support from homeschool families over the weekend. ACTION REQUESTED Please call your state representative this weekend and on Monday morning with this message: "Please vote for Senate Bill 281 because it will empower parents to choose the best education for their children." You can contact your state representative by calling 800-382-9842 or 317-232-9600. You can also find specific contact information for your representative with our legislative toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox/ . Calling published home telephone numbers may be the best way to contact the representatives over the weekend. BACKGROUND The maximum amount of the credit when fully phased in is $6,000 per year per family. The amount of credit an individual family receives will depend on the number of children being homeschooled, the income level of the family, and status of the phase-in period. Families with income more than 350% of the federal poverty level (about $65,000 for a family of 4) will not be eligible for the credit. Under some circumstances, the tax credit will be "refundable," that is, the state will send the family a refund check for more than the amount of taxes withheld from their paycheck. Thank you for supporting tax fairness for homeschoolers. Sincerely, Scott A.
