Minnesota--Calls Needed to Expand Tuition Credit to Homeschoolers
Dear HSLDA members and friends:
House Bill 1858 would expand the definition of schools eligible to receive money from tuition tax credit programs. This could be a very positive step for homeschoolers. The committee will be considering this bill within the next couple of days, so your immediate call is critical.
ACTION REQUESTED
Please call each member of the House Committee on Taxes and give them this message, "House Bill 1858 would expand the freedoms of private schools and homeschools alike. Please vote 'Yes.'"

BACKGROUND
A number of states have laws that allow a tax credit for businesses that donate money to tuition programs. In every state that has enacted these laws, however, the tuition program money is only available for students who attend private schools.
This bill would make Minnesota the first state to make this business donated tuition money available to homeschoolers, as well as private schools. This bill would re-define "eligible school" in such a way as to include homeschool programs, allowing homeschoolers to obtain tuition money in the same way as private schools do. This would result in money being available to homeschoolers, without the risk of government interference that accompanies direct government contributions, such as vouchers.
Please act today to get this positive change enacted.
Sincerely,
Scott W. Somerville HSLDA Staff Attorney
