====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== March 30, 2005 Texas--Calls Needed to Expand Legal Education Opportunities for Homeschoolers Dear HSLDA members and friends: More and more homeschool graduates are going to law school. This is an important development, since it creates a foundation for homeschoolers to have an impact on our legal system, run for office, and serve in government. House Bill 826, presently in a subcommittee of the House Licensing and Administrative Procedures Committee, will make it possible for homeschool graduates of quality distance-learning law school programs to take the Texas Bar Exam thereby allowing them to practice law in the state. For instance, homeschoolers who graduate from the distance learning school Oak Brook College of Law in California are currently prohibited from taking the Texas Bar Exam. H.B. 826 would allow these types of students the opportunity to practice law in Texas. Over the last eight years I have worked with numerous Oak Brook law students who have worked as Legal Assistants for the HSLDA Legal Department. They have turned out to be the best Legal Assistants to serve HSLDA. In fact, we have hired two graduates of the school to work as lawyers in our office. To continue to deny these exemplary lawyers that graduate from Oak Brook from practicing law in Texas serves no useful purpose. Please take the time to make a call urging your representative to vote for this bill. ACTION REQUESTED 1. Call the three members of the subcommittee and give them this message: "Please vote for House Bill 826, which will allow graduates from proven distance-learning law schools to take the Texas Bar Exam. This bill will benefit Texas by allowing these skilled graduates to practice law in the state." Members of the subcommittee: Representative Chente Quintanilla Phone: (512) 463-0613 Representative Kino Flores Phone: (512) 463-0704 Representative Charlie Geren Phone: (512) 463-0610 2. Call your state representative with the same message. You can find information on your representative by using our Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox/ . BACKGROUND This bill was filed in the previous legislative session and passed the House, but failed to pass the Senate. Representative Robert Talton refiled the bill this year, and it went before the subcommittee on March 29. It was expected to pass easily, but several Texas law schools submitted opposition letters. Despite the testimony of proponents for the bill, it was left pending in the committee. The subcommittee is expected to vote soon and your calls are needed to pass the bill. This type of law school is a good fit for homeschool students, and passage of the bill will allow graduates to practice in Texas. Currently only California welcomes these students, and many of them are successfully practicing law in that state. For more information on the bill, please visit http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?ID=2237 . Thank you for your calls.
