Rhode Island--Overflow Crowd Opposes Sex Education Bill
Dear HSLDA members and friends:
Yesterday an overflow crowd of nearly 100 homeschoolers made a stand for freedom and opposed Representative Elizabeth Dennigan's bill, House Bill 5354, which would force government-controlled sex education on homeschool families.
Representative Dennigan found herself constantly on the defensive during the hearing before the House Health, Education and Welfare committee. She even went out into the hall to try to win the homeschoolers assembled there to her cause. Her efforts were fruitless.
Witness after witness testified that the bill should be defeated, or at the very minimum, amended to exempt homeschool families. Unfortunately, Representative Dennigan never seemed to fully understand the inconsistency of forbidding sex education from being taught from the point of view of Biblical morality, but mandating that undefined "community values" and "cultural sensitivity" be elevated to the supreme guiding authority.
The committee discussed several possible amendments, but did not vote on any of them. We will watch this bill closely. If the committee votes in favor of the bill without an amendment that fully protects homeschool families, we will carry our message to the full House of Representatives.
Thank you for your phone calls. They immediately gave Dennigan's plan to invade family privacy a high profile. At least one radio talk show discussed her scheme at length. With your continued help, and God's grace, we believe this threat to family integrity can be turned back.
Sincerely,
Scott Woodruff HSLDA Staff Attorney
