====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== March 10, 2005 Ohio--Calls Needed to Prevent Pastors from Becoming Agents of the State Dear HSLDA members and friends: We sent you an e-lert last month urging you to call the Ohio Senate to block Senate Bill 17, which would make pastors mandatory reporters of child abuse. Effective testimony was given at the hearing on this bill which helped senators understand the problem. Unfortunately, supporters of turning pastors into agents of the state have not given up. We need your calls once again to help these senators defeat this bill. ACTION REQUESTED Please call the members of the Judiciary - Criminal Justice Committee and give them this message: "Please vote no on SB 17. It does nothing to prevent priests from abusing children, and it turns pastors into agents of the state." Judiciary - Criminal Justice Committee Jim Jordan, Chair 614-466-7584 Patricia Clancy, Vice Chair 614-466-8068 Marc Dann, Ranking Minority Member 614-466-7182 Mark L. Mallory 614-466-5980 Steve Austria 614-466-3780 Kimberly A. Zurz 614-466-7041 David Goodman 614-466-8064 Timothy Grendell 614-644-7718 J. Kirk Schuring 614-466-0626 BACKGROUND Homeschoolers have helped block Ohio's effort to turn pastors into mandatory reporters of child abuse for over a year now. Senate Bill 100, the predecessor of Senate Bill 17, passed the Senate with only one dissenting vote. When it arrived in the House, however, courageous legislators insisted on real answers to the problem of child abuse by priests, rather than a superficial answer which would cause more harm than good. With almost 4,000 member families in Ohio, HSLDA played a significant role in defeating Senate Bill 100. With the new legislative season, however, Senate Bill 100 has been reintroduced as Senate Bill 17 and is being pushed through the Senate again. This time, we hope to amend the bill in the Senate, so that real reforms can become law. Your calls to the judiciary committee can make a real difference. With enough public protest, this committee will have an incentive to amend the harmful aspects of this bill. Each phone call that you or a friend can make will have its greatest effect now, while the committee is considering the bill. Thank you in advance for your effort on this issue.
