Virginia--School Districts Begin School Census

Dear HSLDA members and friends:

School districts across Virginia have started to distribute the
Triennial Census of School Population. You may have already received
this census or will receive it within the next couple of months.

Virginia law requires each school district to take a census of all
persons ages 5 - 19, who are residing in the school district. However,
there is no requirement that anyone respond to the census.

The census is to be completed every three years, and must count all
people within the 5 - 19 age bracket, whether they are public,
private, or homeschooled. It is possible that certain forms will also
ask for additional information for statistical purposes.

The purpose of this census is to count school age residents in
Virginia. These numbers are used for determining how much money is
given to the local public school.

There is no requirement to fill out the census. Although Virginia law
requires school districts to send out the census, there is no
enforcement provision that a school district may use to compel a
family to fill out the census. Therefore, we recommend that families
use their own discretion in determining whether or not to fill out the
census.

If you have any specific questions regarding the Triennial Census of
School Population, please call our office for more information.

Sincerely,

Scott A. Woodruff
HSLDA Staff Attorney

-> Will your children's inheritance retain its value?

If you pass on a legacy of freedom, your children and their
children's children will thank you. But freedom is never secure;
it must always be guarded. Membership with HSLDA is an investment
in the future that can be passed on to future generations of
families wanting to teach their children at home.
