====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== March 1, 2005 New Mexico--Call Needed Now - Support a $3,500 Tax Deduction for Homeschoolers Dear HSLDA members and friends: Last year, a bill was introduced that would provide homeschool families with a tax deduction for each of their homeschooled children. That bill did not succeed in committee, and was defeated when the session closed. This year, however, a similar bill has been introduced, and has passed the committee. If successful, this bill would give homeschoolers a $3,500 deduction per student on their New Mexico income tax. Homeschool groups expressed concern over some objectionable language in the bill, which referred to "registered" homeschoolers. New Mexico lawmakers listened to those concerns, and amended the bill to remove this language. The work of homeschoolers is already taking effect. Your calls are needed now to show support for this bill so we can achieve a tax deduction for homeschool families. ACTION REQUESTED 1. Please call your State Senator and ask him or her to support Senate Bill 144 on the floor of the Senate by giving them this message, "SB 144 would empower parents to make the best decision for their children's education. Please vote 'Yes!'" To find your Senator, go to HSLDA's legislative toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox . Sincerely, Scott Somerville HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Have you ever yelled into the wind, only to hear the sound of your voice blown back at you? It's hard to be heard in the midst of a storm. Trying to influence federal legislation is much like yelling to be heard while standing in a fierce wind. Yet when 80,000 voices join together, they become a powerful force that cannot be drowned out. Join HSLDA to be heard above the tempests that threaten homeschool freedoms.
