Hawaii--Your Calls Have Defeated the Daytime Curfew Bills
Dear HSLDA members and friends:
Thank you for your calls on the Daytime Curfew Bills, Senate Bill 1014 and House Bill 226. Because of your calls the Senate Education and Military Affairs Committee has voted 5-0 to "hold" the Senate version. This means the bill is dead for this year!
In addition, the House version of the bill has also been defeated for this year! We have been assured by the House Education Committee Chairman, Representative Roy M. Takumi, that House Bill 226 will not be scheduled for a hearing for the rest of this legislative session.
We are convinced that your calls, despite the fact that the bills had broad support, caused the Hawaii legislature to vote against daytime curfews. It demonstrates once again that homeschoolers can make a difference even when the momentum is against us.
If these bills had passed they would have prohibited a minor, who was of compulsory attendance age, from being in public from the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This legislation undermined the freedom and liberty that we enjoy in the United States.
Since Hawaii is in the first year of a two year legislative session it is possible for these bills to be re-introduced next year. However, we will continue to monitor these bills to help protect the rights of homeschool parents in Hawaii.
Thank you for all your calls over the past few weeks!
Sincerely,
Thomas Schmidt HSLDA Staff Attorney
