====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 8, 2005 Virginia--Calls Needed to Support $250 Tax Deduction for Homeschooling Dear HSLDA members and friends, Senator Russ Potts has introduced Senate Bill 1239, which allows homeschool parents to take a $250 tax deduction for homeschool expenses on their Virginia income tax. The Senate voted to pass the bill unanimously on February 4, and it is now being considered by the House Finance Committee. We need your calls in order to pass this bill in the House Finance Committee. Introduced by Delegate Chris Saxman, the $1,200 tax credit contained in House Bill 1942 was transformed in the House Finance Committee last week. The bill no longer applies to homeschooling. It has become a pilot project for three struggling school districts. Consequently, we no longer support this bill. The only remaining tax relief for homeschoolers is the $250 tax deduction in SB 1239. ACTION REQUESTED Please call the members of the House Finance Committee and give them this message: "Please support Senate Bill 1239. This will benefit parents and children and promote education in our commonwealth. Parents deserve a tax break for educational expenses." House Finance Committee Members: Del.
