====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 3, 2005 Indiana--Update--Raising the Compulsory Attendance Age Dear HSLDA members and friends: Your calls worked! Although this bill looked unstoppable coming out of the House Education committee with only one dissenting vote, your calls have focused the legislature's attention on the many harmful aspects of this bill. I spoke with bill sponsor Troy Woodruff late on February 2 and gave him a list of the changes needed to amend the bill. Because of the huge price tag that comes with forcing unwilling older teens to stay in school, the bill has been sent to the House Ways and Means committee. This means the bill did not go directly to the House floor for a vote as we had anticipated. After I hear back from Troy Woodruff, I will let you know if more calls are needed. BACKGROUND An incorrect official summary of House Bill 1530 appears to be the source of the persistent but false rumor that HB 1530 raises the compulsory age to only 18, rather than 19. Each bill the legislature prints contains a short summary or digest of the bill. Many rely on the digest to find out what the bill is about rather than actually reading the bill. Unfortunately, the digest for HB 1530 incorrectly states that the bill raises the age of compulsory attendance "to 18 years of age" instead of 19. Thank you for standing with us for freedom! Sincerely, Scott Woodruff HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> How many acorns can a chipmunk hold in its cheeks? We don't know! But we do know that gathering little by little enables ordinary folks to prepare for hard times. That principle is behind HSLDA's payment plan: by paying a month at a time, families can receive an annual HSLDA membership. Meanwhile, they can feel secure as they homeschool and focus on other priorities -their children. Don't go nuts trying to pay for membership all at once. Choose one of our convenient payment plans.
