====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== February 2, 2005 Utah--Call now for homeschool freedom! Dear HSLDA members and friends: Good news! The Senate Education Committee passed Senate Bill 59, the best homeschool bill ever introduced in Utah, by a unanimous vote! Homeschoolers have received such favor in the legislature that it was a Democrat who made the motion to pass the bill. This support was very helpful. ACTION REQUESTED 1. Please contact your own state senator and urge him or her to vote "Yes" on Senate Bill 59. Please say, "Utah is one of only three states to subject homeschoolers to old-fashioned 'approval' procedures. Please vote 'yes' on SB 59 and bring Utah homeschooling into the 21st century." For information on contacting your legislator, visit HSLDA's Legislative Toolbox [LINK]. BACKGROUND Most Utah school districts treat homeschoolers well, but there is a ticking time bomb in Utah law. Utah is one of only three states in the country that gives secular school officials discretionary "approval" powers over home educators. The other two states that give school officials such power are Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and homeschoolers have been subjected to endless harassment in those states. Utah school officials could make life miserable for homeschoolers if they wanted to. When Sandy Shepard took her new job as director of elementary education in Tooele County, homeschoolers there got a quick glimpse of how bad Utah's "approval" law could get. Ms. Shepard insisted that homeschoolers had to offer "the required subjects aligned to the Utah state core curriculum" and make sure that there are "adequate instructional materials." Ms. Shepard set aside a number of days to meet with every single Tooele County homeschooler to "review" their homeschool program. Quick action by Utah homeschool leaders and HSLDA helped nip this threat in the bud, but only a change to the law can eliminate the danger completely. Your call to your senator can change this forever. With your help, Utah will cease to be one of the three remaining "approval" states. Please call your senator today!
