====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== January 28, 2004 Maryland Homeschoolers Ready to Impact the State Capitol Dear HSLDA members and friends: HSLDA encourages all Maryland homeschoolers to come to Annapolis on February 8 to meet their state legislators and build bridges to protect freedom. Christian Home Educator's Network (CHEN) is organizing the "Shine on the State House Day" event. As homeschool families personally thank their Senators and Delegates for protecting homeschool freedom they will be building bridges that will help protect homeschool freedom in the future. This is a tremendous opportunity for families to build relationships with legislators. These relationships will make it much easier for legislators to understand the importance of protecting freedom the next time it is threatened in the legislature. Arrive in the parking lot of the U.S. Naval Academy stadium between 9:00 and 9:15 A.M. It will cost about $5.00 to park there. We will take the free trolley to the state house area and arrive at the "Lawyer's Mall" (by the statue of Thurgood Marshall) at 9:30. CHEN representatives will be there to give you some literature for your Delegate and Senator and help you find their nearby offices. If you would like to watch the House of Delegates conduct its business for a few minutes, about thirty seats will be available in the House gallery at 9:45 on a first come, first served basis. Bring a driver's license for identification and be prepared to go through metal detectors. Consider bringing a home-baked item as a gift for your Delegate or Senator with a note saying, "Good things are made at home, including education." To find the name of your Delegate or Senator, go to our legislative toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox. You may want to call your Delegate or Senator in advance to arrange an appointment with him or with one of his aides. Although this is not necessary, it will help you meet the people who influence homeschool legislation. If your Delegate or Senator can meet with you, they will be happy to speak with you briefly and may ask your children questions such as, "how do you like being homeschooled?" Help your children think through some questions they might be asked and some answers they might give that help express why homeschooling is worth protecting. If you are asked a question to which you do not know the answer, don't guess; just tell them you will get back with an answer shortly and contact HSLDA or a CHEN representative for guidance. Legislators sometimes ask what they can do to help homeschoolers. Since accepting government help often leads to the loss of freedom sooner or later, we do not want to ask for favors. We merely want to ask the lawmakers to protect the freedom to educate our children at home. I hope to see you in Annapolis on February 8. Check your e-mail shortly before you leave to see if there have been any schedule changes. Sincerely, Scott A. Woodruff HSLDA Staff Attorney ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> "I saved my entire membership fee with one discount" "We've been a Liberty Mutual customer for over 12 years. We called and asked about our HSLDA member discount and they lowered our premium by approx $95 per year...coincidentally the same amount as our HSLDA annual membership fee. Thought you'd want to know!!'"
