====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== January 24, 2005 Colorado--Calls Needed to Stop Bill that Opens Door to Mandatory Kindergarten Dear HSLDA members and friends: Significant changes have occurred in the Colorado Legislature since the last election. Lawmakers who are not supportive of homeschooling are in charge of both the Colorado House and Senate. Therefore, we expect several challenges to our freedoms this session. We are working closely with Treon Goossen of Concerned Parents of Colorado and State Representative Kevin Lundberg to monitor legislation and plan strategy. Positive legislation is also planned, including child welfare reform, parent driver's education improvements, tuition tax credits, and protection of religious freedom. We will inform you immediately if these good pieces of legislation are introduced. Meanwhile, one negative piece of legislation has already been introduced, Senate Bill 88, which will open the door to mandatory kindergarten and lower the school census age. We urge you to call your Senator and oppose this bill. Action Requested: Please call your Senator and give him or her this message, "Please vote against SB 88, it will waste taxpayers' money." You can reach your Senator by calling (303) 866-2316 or (888) 473-8136 (if outside the Denver area). You can also find the name and telephone number of your state senator by using the Home School Legal Defense Association Legislative Toolbox at http://www.hslda.org/toolbox. Background: SB 88 will require all Colorado school districts to establish public kindergarten programs. This will open the door for mandatory kindergarten and lower the compulsory attendance age. If SB 88 becomes law the state will expand its jurisdiction over your children. SB 88 will also lower the age for the annual school census to five. This means the local census takers will count five-year-olds in order to increase funding for the public schools. Please take a moment to "warm up" and get active for what promises to be a busy legislative season! Sincerely, Chris Klicka HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Will your children's inheritance retain its value?
