====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== January 11, 2005 Kentucky--School Officials Make Unwanted Visits to Homeschoolers in Harlan County Dear HSLDA members and friends: On January 10, 2005, an unsuspecting HSLDA member family in Harlan County received a visit from their local public school principal and a Board of Education representative. Stepping outside to speak with the two individuals, the mother learned that the visit was intended to "invite" all homeschool children to enroll in the public school system. The mother explained that she was very happy homeschooling her children and did not want to enroll them in the public school. The principal quizzed the mother, asking what grades her children were in, how old they were, and what curriculum she was currently using. Though not required by law, the mother politely answered. The principal and Board of Education representative ended the short conversation by offering their services to homeschoolers in the area and letting the mother know that they would be available if she needed any help with her homeschooling. This visit appears to represent a pattern of similar incidents in Harlan County. Other homeschoolers in the area have reported that they have also experienced similar visits. Please be aware that if you are contacted by the public school officials, you are not required to answer their questions. If you are asked a question that you don't want to answer simply ask a question in response, i.e. what is the purpose of your visit? Then thank them for their visit and inform the public school officials that you are not interested at this time. There is no need for you to allow any public school representative into your home during these visits or even to answer their questions. According to the reports that HSLDA has received these visits are friendly in nature. There is no need to be concerned or feel threatened. However, HSLDA does want you to be aware of these visits so you will be prepared.
