====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== New Jersey: Homeschool Vouchers Neither Wanted nor Needed Dear HSLDA members and friends: An organization is circulating petitions to support vouchers that would allow parents to use money gathered through tax collection to fund various forms of education, including homeschooling. During the twenty years Home School Legal Defense Association has been in operation, we have seen homeschooling grow dramatically and we have seen homeschooled children distinguish themselves in every field of endeavor. This has happened without government assistance of any sort whatsoever, and frequently in the face of government opposition. History teaches us that government money and increased governmental burdens go together. Our analysis also shows that increased governmental burdens do not, however, help homeschooled children. Children in states with the most burdensome homeschool requirements score no better on standardized tests than children in states with the least burdensome requirements. Because of this, HSLDA has consistently opposed government-funded vouchers for homeschoolers. Vouchers will encourage erosion of freedom. Money is not fair compensation for losing liberty. If you are invited to sign a petition, read it carefully. If it supports vouchers for homeschoolers, I urge you to not sign it. Sincerely, Scott A.
