====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== October 8, 2004 New Jersey--Philadelphia Inquirer seeking unrepresentative homeschool family? Dear HSLDA members and friends: Yesterday, Kara Ritter of the Philadelphia Inquirer contacted a homeschooling mother in New Jersey. Ms. Ritter wanted to interview a homeschooling family whose primary reason for educating their children is because "it's not the government's job." The National Center for Education Statistics' website ( http://nces.ed.gov/pubs2001/HomeSchool/reasons.asp ) contains the results of a 1999 survey asking parents why they homeschool. Parents could list more than one reason. Nineteen separate reasons were tabulated, but 'it's not the government's job' is not among them. It appears to Home School Legal Defense Association that Ms. Ritter is looking for someone who is not representative of the homeschool community. The media has the power to skew the public's image of an entire community by singling out an unrepresentative individual and giving him prominence. We hope this is not the Philadelphia Inquirer's plan. Here's a good reason to homeschool that missed the tabulation of the National Center for Educational Statistics. According to Dr. Brian Ray's 2003 study, 58.9% of adults who were homeschooled reported being "very happy." Only 27.6% of other adults reported they were "very happy." Well-adjusted, productive adults who are happy with life-that's a worthwhile educational goal. And it's newsworthy when homeschoolers succeed at twice the rate of the general public.
