====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== August 30, 2004 Maine--A Quick Review of Maine's New Homeschool Procedures Dear HSLDA members and friends: On Friday, May 16, 2003, Governor John Baldacci signed into law a complete overhaul of Maine's homeschool law. Here is a helpful summary as you start a new school year. 1. If a notice of intent was filed for your child in a previous year in Maine, you should send a letter (no particular form is required) to the Commissioner of Education and your local school administrative unit (SAU) enclosing your year-end assessment and stating whether you intend to continue homeschooling the child. This letter is due by September 1. We recommend that you send it return receipt requested, and staple the green postal receipt to your file copy when it is returned to you. 2. If you have a child who will be homeschooled for the first time this fall, you need to file a notice of intent (no particular form is required) with the Commissioner of Education and your SAU. It must be filed not more than 10 days after the child's homeschool program starts. Your notice must include: - the name, signature, and address of the parent or guardian, - the name and age of the student, - the date home instruction will or did begin, - a statement of assurance that instruction will be provided for at least 175 days annually (but you may establish your own school year) and will cover English and language arts, math, science, social studies, physical education, health education, library skills, fine arts and in at least one grade from grade 6 to 12, Maine studies, and in at least one grade from grade 7 to 12, the student will demonstrate proficiency in the use of computers. - a statement of assurance that the parents will submit a year-end assessment from among the authorized options. 3. If you decide to homeschool after the public schools have started, or you move into Maine during school year, follow number 2. 4. You must keep the following records until the homeschool program concludes: all notices, letters and assessments you file with the SAU and Commissioner.
