Department of Education, released its estimate for the size of the
2003 homeschool population. According to the NCES, 1.1 million
children are homeschooled in America, up 29 percent from the previous
estimate of 850,000 in 1999

4. International Update: South Korea and Kenya

South Korea
South Korea has experienced a steady growth in homeschooling in recent
years, fueled in part by the leniency of the country's education laws,
and via the support of the business community.

Kenya
In January 2003 the government of Kenya expanded the public school
system by making it free to all children. The effect of this
proclamation has been an overcrowding of the school classrooms.
Because of this congestion and the cost of private schools, more
Kenyan parents are turning to homeschooling to provide a quality
education for their children.
