====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== August 19, 2004 Virginia--HSLDA Continues to Watch Virginia School Districts Dear HSLDA members and friends: Governor Warner vetoed a bill recently that would have cleared up a problematic portion of Virginia's homeschool law that requires families homeschooling under option 4 to provide a curriculum or program of study that includes the state SOLs for math and language arts. Both houses of the legislature had previously passed the bill by wide margins. Most school systems accept a family's good faith assertion that their curriculum or program of study includes the SOLs. Because of Governor Warner's veto, however, it's inevitable that the occasional renegade school system will assume that parents shouldn't be believed and therefore demand that they "prove" their program includes the SOLs. These school systems damage the community and can create lasting resentment and ill will. HSLDA intends to continue the effort to reform option 4. In the meantime, if you homeschool under option 4 and your school system demands that you "prove" your program includes the SOLs, an appropriate response would be to truthfully state, "I am providing a program of study that includes ... " (then copy and paste all the math and language arts SOLs for your child's grade level). You can access the SOLs at http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?ID=1758 It is not particularly important if your curriculum does not include the SOLs. You can satisfy the SOL requirement if either your curriculum OR your "program of study" includes the SOLs. A "program of study" is much broader than a curriculum and includes the totality of instruction you provide your student. Sincerely, Scott A.
