Ohio--Check Teacher Certification Online

Dear HSLDA members and friends:

Ohio law requires most homeschool parents to provide an assessment at
the end of each year. The assessment can be a standardized test score
or "a written narrative indicating that a portfolio of samples of the
child's work has been reviewed and that the child's academic progress
for the year is in accordance with the child's abilities." This
written narrative must be prepared by either a certified teacher or
"some other person mutually agreed upon." Thanks to a new service
from the Ohio Department of Education, parents may now quickly check
to see whether their reviewer is a currently certified Ohio teacher.
Just click http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?ID=1716 to check your own
teacher's certification.

Any system run by computers over the internet is susceptible to
problems, however, and this one is no exception. Suppose a homeschool
family turns in a review written by "Cathy Smith," and the
superintendent checks to see whether "Cathy Smith" is certified. If
her name is spelled "Kathy," or if her certificate was issued under
her maiden name, rather than her married name, the superintendent may
assume that the homeschoolers are breaking the law. By checking the
teacher certification website before assessments are submitted,
homeschoolers can avoid unnecessary troubles.

If a teacher turns out not to be certified, Ohio law still permits
that person to prepare a written narrative, as long as it is "mutually
agreed upon" with the school superintendent. We encourage families to
check their teacher's certification well before the end of the year to
leave plenty of time to resolve any problems.

Sincerely,

Scott W. Somerville, Esq.
