July 12, 2004 Dear HSLDA members and friends: Year after year, the Columbus Public Schools distributes a collection of forms called the "Home Schooling Application Packet." This document is riddled with problems, beginning with the name (homeschoolers do not "apply" for "permission" to teach their own children in Ohio), to their demand for a social security number for each student. HSLDA has repeatedly advised Columbus that it is in violation of the Federal Privacy Act of 1974, with no response. We are now preparing to take additional action to change Columbus's procedures. Please forward this e-mail to any homeschoolers you know in the Columbus area. We would appreciate any input from families who actually live in the school district before we take action.
