====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== May 28, 2004 New Jersey--Rally A Huge Success; Bill Could Be Heard Thursday Dear HSLDA members and friends: The rally was a huge success! 1,600 or more homeschoolers gathered on Monday on the steps of the Statehouse to speak out in favor of freedom and against Assemblywoman Loretta Weinberg's bill, A1918. There were few, if any, parking or transportation problems to deter participation. Mothers, fathers, young adults, children, and babes in strollers formed a large, colorful, enthusiastic, crowd. Dozens held large signs carrying our message. Some gathered under the large nearby shade trees; others covered the sunny plaza in front of the state house and spilled into the street, where mounted officers patrolled on horseback. Numerous lawmakers (including U.S. congressman Scott Garrett) spoke to the group, as well as members of the New Jersey Home School Task Force, the tightly focused but loosely structured group of homeschool leaders that planned and organized the rally. I spoke to the crowd about some of the many recent legislative victories homeschoolers have won in other states. Speaker after speaker defended the cause of freedom and denounced A1918 as a senseless power grab and a distraction from the real problem, which is taming the DYFS beast. The cheers and shouts of the crowd could be heard for blocks. We came to be heard, and we were! The rally prompted many television and newspaper reports. Our presence was felt in Trenton and across the state. Thank you for coming and helping make a dramatic statement in defense of freedom! There was no rain, no permit or law enforcement problems, and few if any transportation or parking problems. God answered our prayers! If you attended the rally, you will never forget it; if you did not, you may have a second chance soon. The rally was just a prelude. The Assembly Education Committee may hold a public hearing on the bill. This will be the event that justifies every homeschooler in the state coming to Trenton. The Committee will meet on Thursday, June 3, and we hope to know shortly whether this bill will be on the agenda. Please check your email frequently. Thank you for standing with us for freedom!
