====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== May 18, 2004 Minnesota--Senate Rejects Homeschool-Friendly Education Commissioner Dear HSLDA members and friends: As we reported recently, Governor Pawlenty nominated Cheri Pierson Yecke to be Minnesota's new Commissioner of Education. Mrs. Yecke has been very friendly to homeschoolers in the past. Early Sunday morning, the full Senate voted on her nomination. By a party line vote, the Senate chose to remove Commissioner Yecke from office. This is troubling news, with substantial implications for homeschoolers. Morgan Brown, Acting Commissioner Yecke's choice to head the Division of Choice and Innovation had already taken steps to resolve some longstanding problems homeschoolers have faced in Minnesota. Mr. Brown's initiative reflected his boss's commitment to true educational freedom for Minnesota citizens. With Mrs. Yecke removed, it is now up to us to continue to fight for freedom. Homeschoolers can have a significant effect on the process of choosing a new commissioner if they work hard and work together. Please be prepared to contact your Senator to voice your support or opposition for Governor Pawlenty's next nominee. The person who leads Minnesota's Department of Education needs to be a friend of home education, not a foe. It is up to us to help choose that person!
