====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== May 13, 2004 Missouri--SB 968--Stop Calls for Now Dear HSLDA members and friends: Despite the best efforts of Missouri homeschoolers, and the many phone calls you have made to get our message across, it appears there is no longer a realistic chance to defeat SB 968 or remove the language that will allow St. Louis to raise the age of compulsory attendance. The compulsory age provision is only one small part of SB 968. The bill as a whole appears to have overwhelming support in the legislature. HSLDA opposes any increase in the compulsory attendance age because it reduces the freedom of parents to choose what is best for their children. With God's help, nearly every bill proposing to expand the age of compulsory attendance that HSLDA members have opposed across the nation has gone down to defeat. Our decision to recommend that calls be stopped in this case does not mark a change in our vision. We will continue to fight every new bill that seeks to expand government control over our children through expanding the compulsory attendance age. Nonetheless, since a victory for freedom no longer appears possible in this specific instance, we feel compelled to recommend that calls be discontinued at this time. Please check your email frequently. Tomorrow is the last day of the legislative session. If anything occurs to change our assessment, we will let you know at once. Thank you for all you have done to help protect freedom in Missouri. Sincerely, Scott A. Woodruff, Esq.
