====================================================================== From the HSLDA E-lert Service... ====================================================================== May 12, 2004 South Carolina--Update on Driver's License Bill Dear HSLDA members and friends: In a sudden and unexpected move, the K-12 Subcommittee of the House Committee on Education and Public Works conducted a hearing at 2:30 p.m. yesterday on Senate Bill 988, the driver's license bill. Zan Tyler, Founder of the South Carolina Association of Independent Home Schools (SCAIHS), discovered that the bill had been placed on the Subcommittee agenda without the customary 24-hour notice and marshaled a group of homeschoolers to attend the hearing. She addressed the Subcommittee and explained the concerns of home educators about this bill. As a result, the Subcommittee put this bill aside in order to give homeschoolers an opportunity to offer amendments to the bill. Given this favorable development, there is no need for you to make any additional calls to legislators about this bill at this time. Thank you for calling and expressing your opposition to this terrible bill! Your calls made an impact. We especially commend Zan Tyler for this outstanding effort in defense of the freedoms of homeschooling families in South Carolina and for her effective advocacy before the K-12 Subcommittee. Prior to this, legislators had largely disregarded the concerns of homeschoolers on this bill. HSLDA is often able to alert homeschoolers to dangerous legislation, but the most effective work of lobbying is done through the coordination of state leaders like Zan Tyler who serve your interests so well. HSLDA will continue to work with state homeschool leaders in proposing amendments to this bill to remove threatening provisions. Black, III HSLDA Senior Counsel ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Who are the nation's best lobbyists? We don't know that this has ever been determined; but we do know that HSLDA's National Center for Home Education is the only national organization lobbying on behalf of homeschoolers on Capitol Hill.
